Eye on Apparel – Let the Games Begin

By Danielle Renda for PPAI

There’s one thing that’s never going out of style, and that’s the world of sports. Whether you’re a fan or player of baseball, football, basketball, soccer, hockey, tennis, golf or esports, the opportunity to cheer for and see your favorite teams play is always a treat. Promotional products can be used to perk up crowds even more, create a buzz before, during and long after the event finishes—and even offer a memento for those who eagerly wanted to attend, but were unable to fit the game into their schedules or budget.

According to the American Marketing Association, sales in the international sports market have continued to skyrocket year over year and were responsible for $90.9 billion in revenue in 2017. It’s a vast industry that’s characterized by revered players, high-energy events, avid supporters and dedicated tailgating. Promotional products, such as logoed apparel, hats and other accessories, can be used to bolster fan support and create word-of-mouth exposure, influencing other fans to purchase gear from their favorite teams.

This reach extends even further thanks to social media, with fans sharing photos or short videos of themselves enjoying the festivities—whether tailgating, sitting in stadium seats or watching the game from the comfort of their own living rooms—while wearing or using the branded merch. It’s a common sight to see fans sporting team jerseys on gameday, regardless of whether they’re attending a live event.

Statistically, fans aren’t shy about their spending when it comes to supporting their teams. CNBC reported that in 2017, consumers spent $56 billion to attend sporting events, with 34 percent of American adults spending, on average, $710 per person. An additional 12 percent of Americans spent an average of $273 on sports-themed video games ($8 billion in total sales), followed by eight percent who spent $254 on race entry fees ($4.8 billion in total sales) and four percent who spent $251 to partake in fantasy sports leagues ($2.3 billion in total). The sports industry reach even extends to gym membership purchases and marathon entries, according to A national survey of 1,003 American adults showed that 23 percent of sports-related consumer spending is put toward gym memberships, while eight percent is to partake in outdoor events, like a 5K run or obstacle course-style race.

This unisex Just Hoods Letterman Jacket can celebrate today’s teams with a vintage look. Create a custom look using the school’s varsity colors or coat of arms, with 18 striped patterns to choose from.

Rep your team with a look that’s not only perfect for cheering on the sidelines—but ideal for getting in on the action afterwards. This WA938 Men’s Run Away Jacket is water-resistant and features a full zip with an elastic sleeve hem and a back vent with hook closure. For safety, the jacket includes a reflective zipper chest pocket and back reflective elements for visibility in low light. To accommodate runs—and the jam-out sessions that coincide—the top left shoulder has a headphone loophole. Available in S-3XL in emerald, black and red (shown).

A favorite choice for sports teams, college campuses and tailgating, the Trucker Snapback is a sleek and timeless selection, with a pre-curved, contrast-stitch visor for style, and an adjustable, plastic snapback to ensure a perfect fit. The cap features a 100 percent polyester mesh back, which is structured mid-profile and includes a six-paneled construction. And with more than 80 colors to choose from, wearers will fit right in with their team or school mascot.

When tailgating, your last concern should be stressing about keeping your brand-new jersey clean while grilling cheeseburgers. This Q-Tees Full-Length Apron with Pouch, which features an adjustable neck strap with buckle, waist-side ties and a three-section pouch pocket, will keep your attire pristine and keep your focus where it should be—on the cheeseburgers (and fun). Printed in a fun, colorful design with the option to imprint different designs on each side at no additional cost, the school ordered extra socks to sell in the sporting event concession stands after the event culminated—and they sold out of every pair. For their next fundraiser, the school plans to offer the socks again, incorporating a student art contest for the selected design.

Your Business’s Role In Implementing Eco-Friendly Solutions

By Ashley Summers for Blue & Green Tomorrow

The call to implement better environmental policies has become more urgent now than ever. Threats to our mother earth are mounting at an alarming rate. Inside Climate News issued a report on the state of global warming a couple years ago. They said that the polar ice caps are melting at an accelerated pace, which is already having implications at lower latitudes. This could cause serious consequences for coastal cities around the world.

Why More Businesses Are Taking Green Initiatives

As a result, businesses are under more pressure than ever to play their part in addressing climate change. John Boitnott of Inc. points out that they are taking more steps than ever to go green. They aren’t just using renewable materials. They are revamping their strategy from top-to-bottom. They are working on fixing their supply-chain models to take shorter routes to use less energy, avoiding using unnecessary paper and doing plenty of other initiatives.

These steps are helping in a lot of ways. It might stave off regulators, who are more than eager to hold their feet to the fire to make them operate in a more eco-friendly way.

What is Your Company’s Role in the Fight Against Climate Change?

There have been reports of erratic climate patterns, animals migrating out of their natural habitat, extreme weather conditions and many other concerns. As the stewards of this planet, humans must shoulder the responsibility of taking care of our environment for all species.

Countless organizations and businesses have participated in various programs to promote better lifestyle habits to improve health and sustainability. Companies are shifting to marketing strategies that influence consumers purchasing decisions to advance social responsibility. Here are some ways in which your business can contribute to the cause.

Go paperless

As much as possible, skip paper transactions. Make use of electronic receipts or sales invoice. Try to communicate with email or mobile phones. If the paper cannot be avoided, make sure you are using eco-friendly paper.

The term “post-consumer waste” (PCW) refers to recycled paper made entirely from post-consumer waste. In other words, it is waste that has been recycled instead of discarded in landfills or used by the same factory to create more products. Paper stock that is not 100% made from post-consumer waste is likely to have non-recycled material in it. Therefore, choose banner printers that use 100% PCW paper stock when printing your marketing materials such as banners, flyers, and business cards.

Reduce your company’s carbon footprint

Not only does this step save your business some money, but it’ll also allow for it to be regarded as an eco-friendlier and a socially-responsible organization. A Nielson report showed most customers prefer green brands.

Some ways to reduce your company’s carbon footprint include enabling power saving mode for appliances and electronics that are used intermittently, recycling metal components in old computers, switching to rechargeable batteries, maximizing natural light, and ensuring the use of energy efficient appliances in your office. Go the extra mile, literally, by possibly walking to work or using public transport instead. Alternative fuel options such as biodiesels and ethanol-doped gasoline can also be considered for your own vehicle.

Partner up with other companies to achieve a common goal

Two is better than one after all. Look for, or cook up, possible partnerships with like-minded businesses and together take actions towards sustainability. Brainstorm on ideas and create products, services, or events that can improve your environmental impact and develop strategies for a collective paradigm shift where our economy is characterized by reduced consumption of natural resources and recycling. Also, through partnerships, you are able to generate more support for some non-profit environmental organizations so that you can shed more light on their causes.

Running an eco-friendly business is more beneficial than we realize. You are saving money which is good for your business, you are fostering a healthy business environment which is good for the economy, and you are saving energy which is good for the environment. There really is no losing end in a venture like this.

Why This Sustainable-Apparel Subscription Service Has a Long Waiting List

By Brendan Menapace for Promo Marketing

The last few years have been all about subscription services. We sign up for services that deliver shaving equipment, cleaning supplies and pet toys on a regular basis. They’re great because we don’t have to do anything but check the mail, but the problem is they do accumulate a bit of waste. That’s why Kristy Caylor, creator of For Days, combined the convenience of subscription delivery services and the need for cutting down on waste.

In an interview with Forbes, Caylor detailed her service, which allows subscribers to choose from a selection of apparel items, namely T-shirts, and send back the ones they don’t like so others can try. Taking the green initiative further, users can send back heavily worn T-shirts when they otherwise might have donated them or thrown them away, and the company recycles the fiber into new shirts.

“Members start with a trial kit,” Caylor told Forbes. “They can try up to 10 items to find their favorites. You decide what to keep and send back the rest to set your membership. Join once and then swap forever. Whether you rip, stretch, stain or wear out your clothes, order a new item any time for $8. Put the old item into the prepaid mailer and send it back to us. All returned For Days product gets sorted, sanitized, broken down and blended into fresh new yarn. A 50/50 blend of new and recycled fibers is then used to create new For Days product.”

For Days

Instead of sending your old stuff to a landfill, send it to us.

This January, you’ll get $4 for each old item of clothing sent back. You can use that dough to get more insanely great tees. We’ll recycle your clothes that have seen better days into better things.

The idea came to her after working in the corporate apparel world and saw firsthand the amount of waste created by global textile demand, especially for T-shirts.

“After business school, I went to the Gap brands, where I launched and grew various businesses in the United States and Asia markets,” she said. “While I was living in Japan, I spent time in our factories and was deeply impacted by the magnitude of our production. We were just making so much stuff. The social and environmental repercussions were clear and I couldn’t believe how disconnected I was. I felt strongly that if I had this reaction, in time, customers would as well.”

For Days launched in May of last year, and expanded its wait list (yes, it’s that popular) in September. They’ve since had to reinstate the wait list after demand exceeded supply capabilities.

Caylor also said the choice of offering T-shirts as opposed to other garments came from the desire to appeal to as wide a market as possible and to be as inclusive as the company could.

“We decided to launch with T-shirts because they are one of the most historically iconic items of clothing,” she said. “T-shirts are inclusive of age, gender and culture.”

The company has expanded to more specialty items like fleece joggers, hoodies and polo shirts. It wants to expand even more to be able to fully outfit customers every day.

Apparel recycling is absolutely going to be a trend that catches on in the future. Green initiatives are already becoming mandatory for companies across multiple industries, but consumer tastes are shifting to a point where people want products produced ethically, sustainably and with organic materials. If they can limit waste in the process, that’s definitely an added bonus.
